He did this because he’s concerned. Windows PC sales may still be greater than Mac sales (and probably always will be) but it’s the trends he worries about and should be worried about.
Windows PC sales are on huge decline. Mac sales, especially laptops are seeing major growth, but it’s not the growing Mac/MacBook sales making the ding in Microsoft that has Balmer worried. It’s the mobile devices. Microsoft is nothing in the smartphone space and they are even less in the tablet space. These things belong to Google and Apple and it is these things that will eventually make PCs nearly fade away.
