A site about the Mac, minimalism and more.

If you are an iOS user, but would like to experiment with Android for whatever reason… here is a free, simple way to do so:

1) Download Android Pre Installed VDI for VirtualBox.
2) Extract the files.
3) Go to VB and create new Virtual machine with following configuration:
OS – Linux
Version – Other
Memory – 512MB
Video Memory: 12MB or more
ACPI: enabled
IO APCI: enabled
PAE/NX: Enabled
4) Under virtual hard disk, select Use existing hard disk option and browse for the Android .vdi from extracted folder.
5) Done.

It’s been awhile since I bothered messing with anything Android. I like to keep up-to-speed with things and to make sure I am judging things fairly so this was a good alternative to buying any Android devices. As I researched Android devices I found there was no clear, good choice - each device, no matter the price, had mixed reviews and I did not feel comfortable shelling out any amount of money for any of these devices.

For me, it was immediately clear that Android is (still) inferior to iOS. It seems years behind… if I am to be kind. I’ve already deleted my Android virtual disk image. It did not take long to decide to do this. It’s clear why both AT&T and Verizon find more than half their smartphone sales are iPhone sales.

Still, as this process takes very little time and costs nothing, it is a worthwhile thing to try.
